Sun Devils AAU Basketball Program
Established in 2001- The Sun Devils Basketball Program
is an affiliate of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). It is the ambition
of this program to offer the highest level of personal instruction and
coaching in the Merrimack Valley. The programs goal is to establish
teams for players 10 - 17 years of age. We will continually strive to
keep the cost low and the instructional skills very high while
maintaining a high level of spirit and enthusiasm for the game.
Season Length
The spring season begins on March 1st and continues until the last week in July.
The fall season begins on Sept 1st and continues until Thankgiving.
Program Commitment to Our Players and Parents
It is the ambition of this program to provide the highest
level of instruction that is age appropriate and meets the realistic
performance goals agreed upon by player, parents, coach, and the Program
Director. Each player will be evaluated and provided specific goals and
skills to work on during games, practices and their free time. Each
player will have three specific skills to focus on and practice to
perfection. We will identify those strengths to make stronger and those
weaknesses that need extra attention. Plays, parents, coach, and the
Program Director will SIGN OFF on the skill focus.
Each team member will receive a uniform with their
name and number on the back and Sun Devils logo on the front.
Tryouts
Players must attend the appropriate tryout for their age level. Determination
on who may play above their age level will be decided by the program director
and the player's coach at that age level.
A $25 non-refundable tryout fee will be assessed each player trying out which will
offset the gym cost and provide the player with an AAU sanction card.
All returning players must attend tryouts.

Tournaments
Spring Season:
We will be attending 5 or 6 tournaments based on
registration fees collected. On top of these tournaments the program
will host tournaments which our teams will attend as long as we have
teams in their age bracket attending them.
Fall Season:
We will be playing in 2 tournaments or 8 games based on
registration fees collected. On top of these tournaments the program
will host tournaments that our teams will attend as long as we have
teams in their age bracket attending them.
Custodian, gym and referee
fees are paid directly out of the monies collected for each tournament.
We will need help from our parents to run the concessions, keep the
books, and run the clocks at our hosted tournaments.
Practice
Each team will have a minimum of 2 practices a week during the season that will be
at least one and a half hours in length. Players are expected to come on time for each scheduled practice
and be prepared to start on time. If you can't make a scheduled practice it is the responsibility of
the player to contact their coach. Remember that effort in practice is a criteria for playing time
missed practices will reduce playing time.
Where Does the Money Go?
Player fees and fundraising efforts are used to pay
tournament registration fees, AAU sanctions and insurance cards, use of
facilities bill ($25 a week), scrimmage fees, fees for referees, score
books, basketballs, and other incidental costs. Sanctioned tournaments
cost between $400.00 and $425.00 per tournament. Any profits from hosted
tournaments are used for scholarship players, uniforms, internet
expenses, and whatever we can spend to break even or reduce costs.
Program Fees and Costs
Spring Season:
The 2004 fee of $400.00 covers player uniforms and team
entry fee into 6 tournaments. We also do our best to schedule scrimmages
throughout the season along with the three tournaments that players
attend for free. Again the idea is to keep our costs low and focus on
instruction.
Fall Season:
The 2004 fee of $125.00 covers team
entry fee into 2 tournaments along with our own hosted tournaments that players
attend for free and an AAU insurance card. Again the idea is to keep our costs
low and focus on instruction. There is also a $25 fee to cover the
cost of a uniform for new players or returning players who need a replacement.
Are coaches paid?
No, all coaches are volunteers and are not paid, nor have
they been reimbursed for any expenses associated with travel to and from
tournaments. Head coaches who have children in the program do NOT
pay. Coaches will be evaluated at the end of each season by the players,
parents and the program director.
Fundraisers
During the season the Sundevils organization will run several fundraiser
activities. Besides helping with our other worthwhile causes the money
collected from these activities will be used to help offset the cost for
our parents.
In the past we have run events such as car washes, canning drives, and the
sale of Yankee Candles.
All players and parents are expected to help with these events.
Family Commitments
Parents are expected to ensure that their children arrive
at practice and games on time. Please communicate to the coach if you
have any issues egarding transportation or attending scheduled practices
on time In effort to keep costs low we are asking that parents become
more involved running home tournaments.
Who Starts? - Playing Time?
It's simple - Each player decides if they will start or
how much time they play in each game. Playing time will be decided by game
situations, effort in practice, and a players positive attitude. All players
will be accorded adequate time to develop their skills learned in practice.
Scholarship Athletes
Understanding that some people may not have the resources to pay all or part of
their team fees we offer a scholarship program where we will find sponsors to
help pay for or defray a childs cost to play for us.
A scholarship athletes status is held in the highest confidence between the player
and the program director. Playing time and access to program events will never be
limited by a Scholarship Athletes status.
If you wish to apply for a Scholarship Athletes status contact the programs director.
Player Commitments and Expectations
Players are expected to practice with purpose,
demonstrate the highest level of ambition, sportsmanship, and dedication
to the sport. This is a team sport and each player will play as a member
of one team and one organization. You are being asked to do your best on
and off the court. Each player is 100% accountable for their success on
the court. Players are expected to bring their passion for basketball
and be willing to share that passion with their teammates. In order to
become a complete player each player must work hard.
Players are also expected to take personal
accountability and responsibility for their individual skill
advancement. Players are expected to support and respect their coach,
the referees, their teammates, and opposing players at all times.
Players are expected to attend all practice sessions and be on time.
Players are expected to attend every tournament or scrimmages and to
notify their coach if they are unable to attend. It is also the
responsibility of each player to communicate with their coach and/or the
director of the Sun Devils program regarding playing time, instruction
received, and any other issues on your mind. Talking back to officials
or coaches will NOT be tolerated.
Player Focus
This program MUST Be fun! If
a player is NOT having fun then they must communicate this feeling
or concern to the director of this program. The ambition of this program
is to focus on individual player development (physical/mental skills)
both on and off the court.
